Martin Puryear’s works at Matthew Marks Gallery are public vessels built for interior thinking, containers of secrets. Several of these sculptures were first presented at the Venice Biennale 2019, where he represented the United States. The artist’s forms today resonate with those once reviewed in Arts Magazine (November, 1987), as just beyond the reach of symbolism and metaphor.
